Project Description

In 1998 Bombardier delivered a 1.3km, dual lane shuttle system utilizing two trains

comprised of two CX-100 technology vehicles for the Kuala Lumpur International

Airport KLIA. After five years of successful operation in its original configuration, the

need for additional capacity resulted in Bombardier receiving an order in 2003 for an

additional two cars to expand the operating fleet to two three car trains. The original

system consists of two stations (the Contact Pier and Satellite A) with an on line

Maintenance Facility located at Satellite A.

The Spur Line system addition shall consist of the construction of an off-line

Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility OMSF located west of Satellite A. The

Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility shall be connected by commissioning an

existing inactive switch and adding approximately 256 meters of single lane guideway,

along with two (2) new switches to facilitate train movement in and out of the new

Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility OMSF.

Two (2) additional guideway switches shall be cut into existing guideways to connect

guideways one and two just south of the existing systems tunnel. This addition of these

two (2) new guideway switches to the existing guideway shall require relocation of

existing cable trays, and the splicing of existing cables. There shall also be additional

equipment added at these guideway switches for control and operation.

One (1) existing guideway switch shall be activated connecting the main guideway

outside the Satellite A Building connecting the main line to the spur line Operations

Maintenance Storage Facility Building OMSF.

An additional train shall be added during this contract consisting of three (3) CX-100

style passenger vehicles. The passenger vehicles are guided on the roadway by a center

mounted guidebeam which holds them in place with a guide tire/safety disc.

A power and signal assembly is used to furnish propulsion power and signals to the

vehicles and is mounted on top of the guidebeam. Additional power and signal rails

shall be installed as part of this contract, along with associated ramps at the switch

areas.

The existing Automated People Mover APM has a total of two (2) stations. At each

station, sets of automatic lobby door are electrically operated and interlocked to open

and close with the vehicle doors.

The existing Automated People Mover System APMS is fed from a 15 Kilovolt KV

substation to two (2) individual 600 Volt switchgears. The 15 Kilovolt KV substations

feed two, 500 Kilovolt-Ampere KVA transformers at the switchgear in Satellite A and

two, 750 Kilovolt-Ampere KVA transformers at the switchgear at the Contact Pier. The

transformers connect to the 600 Volt switchgear that feed the guideways 600 Volt

conductor power rail assemblies. All power to the new guideway shall be jumpered

from the existing guideways. A slight modification to the existing switchgear at

Satellite A to enable the power to be added to the system shall occur as part of this

contract.

A Central Control room is located at Satellite A and contains display consoles. The

main function of these consoles is to monitor the different functions of the vehicles

automatic train control. A power display console controls power on the guideways and

indicates breaker status overload and ground fault conditions. An alarm display console

indicates system malfunction and communication consoles contain equipment

permitting communication with the vehicles and station platforms. This existing

Central Control at Satellite A will be replaced with a new Central Control at the

Operations Maintenance Storage Facility OMSF.

Automatic Train Control ATC rooms are located at both stations. Each room contains

(but is not limited to) Termination Cabinets, Automatic Train Operation ATO Cabinets,

Radio Cabinets, Close Circuit Television Cabinets, Public Address Cabinets,

Uninterruptible Power Supply Cabinets and Distribution Panel Boards. There will be an

additional Automatic Train Control ATC room in the new Operations Maintenance

Storage Facility OMSF with additional equipment requirements.

A new Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility OMSF shall be built on the Spur

Line end of the system, west of Satellite A. It contains maintenance control panels,

power distribution panels, stand by power cords (stingers) for providing auxiliary

power to the vehicles during maintenance, ground switches, power disconnect switches,

power on lights and power off pushbuttons. It shall be used to provide all heavy

maintenance on the trains. The existing On Line Maintenance located at Satellite A

shall remain in operation, and will provide the daily light maintenance and cleaning of

the trains.

The spur line will connect the present satellite building (A) with the future satellite (B) building.
